It's that time of year again when everyone is thinking of back to school - no matter where you look, there are reminders that summer is coming to an end and school will be back in session.

One of the most important considerations for choosing a new home and the community you want to live in is the schools.

Even if you don't have school age children, and whether you plan to or not, here are the top 3 reasons to research schools during your search for a new home.

How important are school ratings when buying a house?

Checking out the local schools will:
1. Help you evaluate the potential impacts on the resale value of your home.

You might be thinking of buying your first home or your forever home - either way, things can change. You may fall in love with your home, community & lifestyle and decide not to move in a few years. Or you could be offered your dream job and decide to move across the country when you thought you would stay forever.

Love 'em or hate 'em, standardized tests and school ratings are often viewed as a reflection of the quality of the school - even if you know there is more to it than that, your future buyers might not.

2. Help you determine if it is the right fit for your family (current or future).

It certainly won't hurt to think about which schools you would like your children to attend, where they are located, whether they would ride the bus, walk/bike or need to be dropped off.

3. Help you understand the impact it will have on your commute and/or time in the car.

Knowing where the schools are located can help you get an idea of what your commute to work might be like - or a trip to the grocery store in the afternoon. How can you best plan the routes you travel most frequently?

In addition to researching the local school district and schools assigned to your potential new home, you should also consider proximity to daycare facilities, preschools, private schools, and higher learning institutions.
