If you are in the process of building a home, the choice of countertops can make a significant impact on both the aesthetics and functionality of your kitchen. Two popular options that are sure to catch your attention are granite and quartz countertops. While both materials offer durability and beauty, they do have some distinct differences.

PRODUCTION

Granite countertops are known for their natural, unique patterns and colors, making each piece a one-of-a-kind work of art. Granite countertops are cut from stone found in nature. Massive blocks of granite are extracted from quarries and transported to the fabrication facility, where skilled artisans use machinery to shape and polish the stone. Once the fabrication is complete, the granite countertops are then sealed to protect them from stains and ensure their longevity. The result is a unique and durable countertop that can compliment any design style from traditional to modern.

Quartz countertops have gained popularity in recent years due to their durability and aesthetic appeal. Unlike granite countertops, quartz countertops are manmade. The production process begins with the extraction of quartz crystals from mines which are then combined with resin and other additives to create a slurry. This slurry is poured into molds, pressed under high pressure, and cured in ovens to harden the material. Once hardened, the slabs are polished to achieve a smooth and glossy surface. The result is a beautiful countertop that mimics the natural patterns and colors of granite and adds elegance and sophistication to any kitchen.

DURABILITY

When it comes to durability, both quartz and granite are durable options for any lifestyle, however each has their own limitations. Because quartz countertops are manmade and contain strong materials, they are highly resistant to scratches, chips, and cracks. Granite countertops are known for their natural beauty, but they are more susceptible to damage and require regular sealing to prevent staining. Quartz countertops, on the other hand, are non-porous and do not require any sealing, making them easier to maintain and keep looking like new. So, if you are looking for a countertop that can withstand the test of time and provide long-lasting beauty, quartz is the way to go.

Regarding heat resistance, both quartz and granite countertops are known for their ability to withstand high temperatures. However, there are some differences to consider. Granite countertops are naturally heat-resistant and can handle hot pots and pans without being damaged. The heat from cooking or baking will not cause the granite to crack or discolor. While quartz countertops are also heat-resistant, they are not completely heat-proof. Quartz can withstand temperatures up to 150 degrees Fahrenheit, but prolonged exposure to extreme heat can cause the resin in the countertop to discolor or even melt. Therefore, it is important to use trivets or hot pads when placing hot items on quartz countertops to prevent any potential damage. Overall, both quartz and granite countertops offer excellent heat resistance, but granite may have a slight edge in terms of durability and tolerance to extreme temperatures.

MAINTENANCE

Another key difference is maintenance – granite countertops need to be sealed every year or two, depending on the usage, to maintain their resistance to stains. Quartz countertops are non-porous and do not require sealing, so there is no need to worry about spills and stains. Sealing aside, both countertop options are incredibly easy to clean and maintain, requiring only a simple wipe down with soap and water.

COST

Generally, quartz countertops tend to be more expensive than granite countertops. This is because of the extensive production process. On the other hand, granite countertops are cut from natural stone, making them slightly more affordable.
